Abstract
The presence of copper, manganese and iron at the active site of superoxide dismutases (SOD) led many researchers to search for low-molecular-weight complexes of these metals having SOD activity. Various metalloporphyrins have also been reported to posses SOD-like activity, We confirmed that chlorophy¥± and chlorophyll derivatives have the ability to catalyze the dismutation of superoxide and scavenge other reactive oxygen species. Chlorophyllin and iron chlorin e6 (FeCe6) showed the scavenging activities of superoxide, hydroxyl radical and peroxynitrite in our system. Additionally, they protected plasmid DNA and mammalian cell from reactive oxygen species. These results suggest that some chlorophyll derivatives can confer protection from cytotoxic process mediated oxygen- derived radicals
